Organization for Stored Possessions
- Make a list of the items you’re storing. Include photos for highly valuable items. Keep the list and photos in a safe, easy-to-find place
- Create an organization plan for your unit ahead of time. It will save time and hassle
- To make the best use of space, store couches on end and stack chairs seat to seat
- Store blankets, clothes, china, silverware, knickknacks, and other small items in larger pieces and furniture drawers
- Wrap breakables in tablecloths, towels, or blankets
- Don’t forget to leave a walkway through the center of the unit for easy access
- Store possessions in same-sized boxes that can hold 25 to 30 pounds for easy stacking
- Put heavier items on the bottom of the stack. Don’t overpack boxes. They’ll be too heavy to handle and dangerous, too
- Leave room against the wall for air flow within the unit
- Use pallets or blankets to keep your things off of the floor
- Consider buying shelving units to make better use of the available space
- Label boxes on all sides – you’ll save time and headaches down the road
- Pack items that you’ll access frequently near the front
- Disassemble large pieces like bed frames, tables, etc., to save space and prevent breakage. Keep the parts, screws, etc., together with tape
- Clean out appliances before storing them. To prevent mildew, leave the doors ajar on refrigerators and microwaves
- Prevent rust on metal tools, bikes, etc., by applying a small amount of oil. Be sure to keep them separate from items you don’t want spoiled by the oil
- Don’t lay mirrors and paintings flat – store them on end. Wrap and clearly mark them as fragile
- Lay blankets or cloths over, between, and beneath furniture and mattresses to prevent scratching, ripping, and dust buildup
- Wrap cushions to keep them clean
- Prop mattresses so they stand straight. This prevents them from bending out of shape
- Place mouse packets in the corners of your unit. DO NOT OPEN THEM! If packets are empty, replace them. Packets are available for purchase in our office. We don’t have a rodent problem, but prevention measures ensure no problems in the future
- Drain all gas and oil from lawnmowers, snowblowers, etc. It’s illegal to store hazardous or combustible materials
- To prevent staining on clothes, put mothballs on the floor – not in the boxes
- Never give out your access code or keys to someone you don’t trust
- Don’t store food in your unit
- Never hesitate to ask us any questions you may have before or during move-in
- Place cardboard or a protective covering under a vehicle or lawn mower to protect the floor and other items in the unit
